Green steel production lines for Vietnam

The Vietnamese industrial group Xuân Thiện Group is aiming to become a leading manufacturer of high-quality flat steel in South-East Asia with two new production facilities.

As a technology partner, Primetals will supply technical expertise and key components for the project. The focus is on the construction of two production lines, whose production capabilities, according to Primetals, are unique in Vietnam to date.
The first production complex is intended to produce heavy plate. At the heart of the plant will be an EAF Ultimate electric arc furnace, offering high flexibility in terms of feedstock, short tap-to-tap times and reduced consumption. The complex will also feature a twin-ladle furnace, a twin vacuum degassing system, a continuous casting line and a heavy plate Steckel rolling mill. Implementation is to take place as soon as possible.

Maximum energy efficiency in the production of continuously hot-rolled coil

At the same time, a further production line for the manufacture of continuously hot-rolled coil (eHRC) is to be established. This line will be equipped with two EAF Ultimate furnaces, two twin-ladle furnaces, two twin vacuum degassing systems and the advanced Arvedi ESP technology for the production of ultra-thin steel products.
These production capacities are of strategic importance and will enable Vietnam to become self-sufficient in the supply of raw materials for demanding industrial sectors. These include, for example, offshore wind turbine towers and shipbuilding – sectors in which the country has previously relied on imports.
The project combines electric arc furnace technology with ironmaking facilities that rely on environmentally friendly energy sources such as natural gas and, in future, green hydrogen. This approach minimises CO₂ emissions, brings Vietnam’s steel industry into line with global sustainability trends and, according to Primetals, meets the stringent standards of international markets such as Europe and the United States.
Once the plant is operational, Vietnam will be able to produce high-quality steel for the mechanical engineering, automotive and defence sectors. At the same time, this will underline Vietnam’s pioneering role in the global transition to ‘green’ industry.
