Tosyalı Algérie sets a new production record for DRI

Steel producer Tosyalı Algérie has set a new world record in the production of direct reduced iron (DRI), according to SMS. In its first year of operation in 2025, Tosyalı Algérie’s Direct Reduction Module 2 achieved a production output of 2.43 million tonnes.

Tosyalı Algérie operates two direct reduction plants. Module 2 was supplied by Midrex Technologies and its consortium partner Paul Wurth, a company within the SMS group. The Midrex plant produces both hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) and cold direct reduced iron (CDRI). According to SMS, the first DR module ranked third worldwide in terms of annual DRI production in 2025.
The DRI plant Module 2 is connected via a hot material conveyor to a new electric arc furnace (EAF), which enables the EAF to be continuously fed with HDRI. This configuration increases the steelworks’ productivity whilst delivering significant energy savings and reduced emissions. According to SMS, during EAF maintenance or downtime, the plant can seamlessly switch to full-capacity CDRI production, thereby maximising overall operational availability.
“With the commissioning of our second direct reduction module last year, Tosyalı Algérie is now among the sites with the world’s largest twin DRI plants. Thanks to the use of advanced technology, the second DRI module has become the world’s first commercial production plant that can be operated using both natural gas and – following a minor modification – 100 per cent hydrogen,” commented Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of Tosyalı Holding, on the record result.
