Voestalpine modernises hot strip mill

The refurbishment of the laminar cooling section of the hot strip mill in Linz enables uniform, controlled and customised strip cooling profiles across the entire cross-section and length. The modernisation has enabled Voestalpine Stahl to develop new, sophisticated steel grades.

The flat steel production plant has an annual capacity of 5 million tonnes. The contract is being carried out by Primetals and comprises the installation of new laminar spray registers and flow-controlled valves for precise water management throughout the entire cooling section. The scope of the project also includes new roller table side guides, water curtains and a transverse spray system.
The new cooling heads can be adjusted over a wide range using flow control valves. This enables both gentle and rapid cooling with the same equipment, tailored to specific product requirements. The flow-controlled valves automatically record the characteristic flow curve for each valve.
The modernisation results in uniform, controlled and metallurgically tailored cooling profiles across the entire strip width and length, ensuring a balanced heat flow. This supports the development of more advanced, high-performance steel grades with a particular focus on the automotive sector.
